Short Stories ( 6th -12th grade )
A Period Section: 9:15 AM - 10:15 AM

Reading short stories is a beautiful way to explore literature from different eras, cultures, and perspectives. It’s also a great way to study the tools writers use to convey their messages since writers must wield those tools purposefully to make maximum impact with minimal text. In this course, students will read various short stories that illustrate how writers use plot, setting, character, and point of view to convey their messages. In each class, students will then use those tools to write pieces of microfiction or scenes from a larger story, ending the week with material that could find its way into a complete short story or be repurposed to use in creative nonfiction or reflective essays.

Film
( 6th -12th grade )
B Period Section: 10:30 AM - 11:30 AM

How can we articulate films' impact on us in an increasingly visual world? How can we “read” movies the same way we read texts to uncover their rich commentary on the planet? In this course, we’ll gain fluency with filmmakers' tools to convey their messages by studying various short films. We will also practice using those techniques to make our movie trailers for a short story. Students will leave with a greater appreciation for the artistry behind the movies they watch and some tricks for elevating their filmmaking.

Eco Poetry ( 6th -12th grade )
C Period Section: 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

Poetry is an incredible medium for processing emotions, celebrating beauty, and playing with language. At a time when anxiety about the state of the world is at an all-time high, poetry can serve as an emotional release, a medium to express gratitude for life’s gifts, and even a catalyst for change. In this course, we will read a variety of poetry that concerns the Earth and its inhabitants. We will then practice writing our own poetry, using a variety of prompts as well as the natural beauty of the Priory campus to inspire us. Students will be asked to focus on things as small as a blade of grass and as big as a Redwood forest. They will be asked to look inside themselves on some occasions, and on others, they will be encouraged to step outside of their headspace and immerse themselves in their environment.
