“I believe very much in the tradition that art comes from art and nothing else.”
- Wayne Thiebaud
After focusing primarily on traditional photographic work for many years, I was eager to try something new and different and focused my energy on developing a project that was light, whimsical, and joyful. I found myself returning to the still-life paintings of Wayne Thiebaud for inspiration. There is something persuasive and captivating about his choice of subject matter, use of color, and the texture of his paint application that is fanciful, refreshing, and invigorating.
As a result, I began photographing everyday objects and food items. While experimenting with different backgrounds and lighting techniques, I explored a variety of editing approaches in hopes of creating images that provide moments of levity and delight for the viewer, especially during the textured times in which we are living. Similar to Thiebaud's theme of using the art of others to inspire one’s own work, my images are reinterpretations of his still-life paintings of food as photographs.
