Captured Moments

Barbara Greensweig primarily paints on location “en plein air”, standing by her easel and oil paints, viewing scenes as varied as pounding waves by cliffs, vineyards and rolling hills, fields of flowers, picturesque buildings and barns, on foggy or sunlit days, with the view constantly changing.  “Once an image is fixed in my mind, and a quick outline sketch is secured to canvas, I paint what I feel is a captured moment of time and place.”  Barbara believes that the subtle colors of a scene are best viewed in person; she translates these hues into paintings teeming with brilliant color in strong compositions.  The numerous plein air landscapes in smaller formats, finished often in a day’s work, influence the large paintings executed in her studio over longer periods of time.  Barbara says: “There is nothing I enjoy more than pushing oil paint around a canvas, especially when working in the solitude of nature.”

Barbara’s interest in art has spanned 40-plus years of painting in acrylic, watercolor, and now mostly oil paint and gouache.  Barbara has been fortunate to have lived in beautiful places during her art career, from Sonoma County to the town of Montara north of Half Moon Bay on the San Mateo Coast.  A lover of art history, art museums, and world travel, Barbara’s work is influenced by artists as diverse as Edward Hopper, Henri Matisse, and Claude Monet.  Her paintings are part of private and corporate collections in the U.S. and internationally and have been featured on event posters and used in products by a variety of companies.  She has a degree in Art Education and has taught art classes for all ages throughout her career, worked as a museum docent, and volunteers currently for the San Francisco Fine Arts Museum through its Auxiliary.  She exhibits during open studio events, in galleries, and juried shows, and accepts assignments on commission for private clients and businesses.  Barbara paints because it creates joy and fulfilment for her, which she hopes translates into her paintings.
