Guiding Principles: What are Learning Competencies (LCs)?
  • Learning Competencies refer to the competencies of critical thinking, collaboration, communication, creativity, and resilience.
  • LCs are timeless competencies transferable to multiple contexts (subjects and situations), and will prepare our students for 21st century citizenship: navigating and participating in an ever-changing world as life-long learners and stewards.
  • LCs develop over a lifetime. Thus, our educational focus is on process, progress, growth, and learning to learn.
  • To support students’ development, teachers model and practice the LCs with a growth mindset. 
  • LCs support all subject-specific essential knowledge and skills integral to our academic program.
Learning Competencies Defined:
Critical thinking is the ability to reason clearly, draw relevant conclusions, and problem-solve.
 
Students will:
    • Analyze, investigate, and understand complex systems
    • Evaluate different points of view or sources of information
    • Justify claims based on evidence and reasoning 
Collaboration is the ability to work effectively with others.
 
Students will:
    • Respect others’ unique viewpoints and gifts in diverse group dynamics
    • Relate and interact in order to solve problems and accomplish a common goal
    • Resolve conflicts by assuming shared and personal responsibility for completing tasks
Communication is the ability to understand and convey information.
 
Students will:
    • Listen and respond to ideas in different interactive contexts.  
    • Decipher information across multiple mediums
    • Articulate thoughts, data, and findings for various audiences and purposes through oral and written communication
Creativity is the ability to generate new ideas and see new possibilities.
 
Students will:
    • Explore, generate, and refine original ideas and solutions to complex problems
    • Connect, combine, and present learning in new and original ways.
    • Stretch the imagination to create innovative products that are seen as purposeful, valuable, and well-crafted
Resilience is the ability to persevere in the face of obstacles.
 
Students will:
    • Persevere through adversity by choosing optimal tools and sources of support
    • Reflect on challenges and successes to build self-knowledge and self-efficacy
    • Adapt to change or hardship in recognizing growth opportunities
