This class focuses on training beginning and intermediate performers to combine the elements of acting, dancing and singing into performing selections from the Musical Theater genre. MTP utilizes both individual and group work in a variety of shorts scenes, and concentrates on character development through body language/dance and vocal inflection/tone. A variety of techniques and exercises will be employed, and the historical and social contexts of musical theater will be explored as well. Ultimately students will have a better sense and ability of creating characters through music.

Instructional Strategies

Daily practice and rehearsal, minimal lectures, student research.

Assessment

End of semester performance serves as formal assessment, character analysis, historical research papers, and class participation are also paramount.

Outcomes

Each student will grasp the basics of good vocal technique; posture, breathing, vocal production/ projection.
Students will individually make choices about the creation of music in regards to character in each piece.
Students will individually find, utilize, and stretch their own vocal and dance abilities past their own expectations.
The ensemble will form a sense of support and teamwork through the collaborative nature of musical theater.
