Unit Title

Tap, Hip Hop & Contemporary Jazz

Content

For the 1st Quarter, Students are introduced to proper tap techniques. Through watching films such as "Tap", and "Stormy Weather", students will gain an understanding of rhythm, percussion, timing, and non-verbal communication. Through tap students will learn how express emotion through their feet as well as gain an understanding of improvisation, syncopation, Jazz Music, and history.

Through hip hop and Contemporary Jazz students gain an opportunity to strengthen their bodies, improve body posture, and get a great work out through various warm-up techniques and stretches.

Skills

Tap: Time Steps, flaps, shuffles, Hoofer's Circle (Communicating through tap), rhythmic patterns, and mini-combinations.

Hip Hop: The history of the art form, rhythm, isolations, floor work, and social dance skills.

Contemporary Jazz: The emotional impact of dance, modern fortifications, and a general sense of body and spatial awareness.

Allowing each student to reflect their own personal style and emotion through dance.

Encouraging all students to explore movement both in a personal and social sense.

Encouraging students to never give up even if a certain style is difficult for them to grasp.
